About the lecture

As part of the lecture and discussion by the architect Piet Vollaard from Roterdam, one of the authors of the recently published book Making Urban Nature, we will focus on the topics of ecology and biodiversity, animals and biotops in the city and management of urban nature. The program is intended for urban planners, landscape architects, architects, ecologists and anyone who thinks that creating urban nature does not sound like a paradox. We are calling representatives of civil society organizations, general public and media to attend this event. The discussion will be led by Mark Neilen and Ana Džokić (Stealth).

The city is a rich habitat of great biodiversity. Many animal and plant species are now more often encountered in cities than in rural areas. However, urban nature is fragile and jeopardized by the aspirations of planners and policy makers to see the city exclusively as a habitat for people. A design that includes nature, which considers nature as an integral part of the urban organism and an important part of the quality of life of the city (for people and its other inhabitants), is a pioneering practice that has only recently become part of urban planning.

Making Urban Nature is an inspiring book of theory and practice of design that includes nature in European cities. At the same time utopian and pragmatic, it considers the unique nature of urban habitats and calls for the purposeful integration of nature in the design of buildings and open spaces, providing practical examples and design suggestions.

The lecture Making urban nature by Piet Vollaard will be held at Nova Iskra on Thursday, December 30th at 6 PM. The lecture will be delivered in English and is open to the public.
